Petra studied at the Vaal Triangle Technikon and received her diploma in Food Service Management in 1992. She worked at Fedics Food Services until 1996 when she met her husband and moved to the Western Cape.
Petra’s cake journey started when her first son, Michael, turned one year. Her sister in law’s mother made him a cake for his birthday. It was a little blue truck covered with butter icing. The joy of seeing the cake and the detail as to how it was made ignited a spark of excitement to explore her creativity and baking skills.
She started off that time with “Tellytubby” and Barney cakes with her first cakes made with butter icing until she was able to do a short two day course held by Carol Burgers in Cape Town to use pettinice. She learnt how to make figurines and cover cakes with fondant.
Petra had her own little shop where she made lunches, cakes and savory platters and also flower decorations. Circumstances caused her to close the shop in 2004 but she continued however with the cakes as a hobby, because it remained her passion
Her speciality is in the area of wedding cakes, themed cakes and cupcakes as well as other normal sponge and fruitcakes. Eating one of Petra's cakes will take you on a journey to your childhood or future in that of a wedding cake.
